THE public and the UK government are both resolute in their determination to see the illegal migration across the English Channel end.

And that is why I was appalled to see the FDA union — which represents some civil servants — lodging a legal challenge against the Government over Civil Service Code issues under our Rwanda scheme.

The Safety of Rwanda Act was passed by Parliament.

The democratically elected representatives of this country have decided that our deportation scheme should become the law.

These are now decisions for ministers and it is the responsibility of civil servants to implement the lawful decisions of democratically elected ministers.

That is their job.

The Government’s position on this is very clear — it is the job of civil servants to carry out the decisions lawfully made by ministers under domestic legislation as enacted by Parliament.

If a minority of civil servants is not prepared to implement the policies of the Government they serve, then clearly they should consider if public service is for them.
